Truckloads leave for affected areas
LAHORE, Oct 11: Some 48 truckloads of relief goods, donated by the Punjab government for the people affected by the earthquake in Azad Kashmir and the NWFP, left here on Tuesday.
Twelve trucks each have been sent to Rawalakot, Bagh, Muzzafarabad and Mansehra with medicines, blankets, sugar, rice, dry milk, tea and flour bags, ghee, mineral water and biscuit packets.
The relief goods were dispatched in the presence of the Punjab Minister for Chief Minister’s Inspection Team, Col Shuja Khanzada (retired), newly-elected Lahore Nazim Mian Amir Mahmood, senior member of the Punjab Board of Revenue and district coordination officers.
The minister said the Punjab government would set up a tent city in Rawalpindi for the people, who had been rendered shelterless by the disaster. The Punjab House in Rawalpindi had been made a base camp for relief activities.
The government, Mr Khanzada said, was also establishing camp offices in the affected districts of Azad Kashmir and the NWFP for coordinating relief measures.
The teams of surgeons and specialist doctors from the Punjab had reached the affected areas of the AJK and the NWFP. The Punjab government would also provide the required number of ambulances to Azad Kashmir, the minister said.
LAHORE CHAMBER: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry collected Rs3.5 million donations on Tuesday for the earthquake victims.
The LCCI team visited Lunda Bazaar, Brandreth and Chamberlain roads’ markets during the first leg of their fund-raising campaign.
The team members met Photogoods Association president Mian Zaheer at the Chamberlain Road market, Anjum Butt at the Lunda Bazaar and Haji Abdul Rab at the Brandreth Road market, who assured them of their full cooperation in future also.
The LCCI team comprised its president Mian Shafqat Ali, vice-president Aftab Vohra, former presidents Iftikhar Malik, Mian Anjum Nisar and Mian Misbahur Rahman, executive committee members Faisal Iqbal Sheikh, Mian Abuzar Shad, and PIAF vice-chairman Mubashar Sheikh.
