No major damage to SNGPL network

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, Oct 11: The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) on Tuesday said its network did not suffer any major damage because of earthquake.

An official said the company did not have an elaborate network in the Northern Areas, except Abbottabad. “In Abbottabad, the damage is more of individual nature. Some metres and regulators were damaged with falling walls.”

The distribution system as such did not suffer any problem, he said and added: “The company’s distribution network is a buried, welded and flexible structure, which can withstand major tremors like the one that struck on Saturday. Luckily, it also did not fall on the fault line, which could have jolted it beyond its safety factor. That’s why the system remained safe.”

The individual consumers loss was quickly taken care of and at present there were no distribution hiccups. The company was selling 1,800mmcf last week and still selling the same quantity of gas to consumers in the Punjab and the NWFP. It shows that there has been no major problem with the distribution of the company, he added.

Meanwhile, the company has provided Rs25 million — Rs20 million by the company and Rs5 million by the employees — to official relief efforts. It has also established collection points at all its regional and sub-area offices for collection of relief goods. The company has also offered its equipment — cranes, excavators, trawlers, crane-mounted trucks and vehicles — for the relief operations.
