Half of Hazara awaits relief

Published October 12, 2005

ABBOTTABAD, Oct 11: Almost 80 hours after the worst-ever earthquake struck the country, relief work in more than 50 per cent area of Hazara is yet to be started. Such areas include the districts of Battagram and Kohistan with a total population of more than one million.

Like Balakot and Muzaffarabad, Hazara division has been equally damaged and people of these areas are working on self-help basis and removing dead bodies from debris of houses.

According to reports reaching here, earthquake has completely razed almost 60 per cent house of the area especially of main Battagram, Tehsil Alai, Battal, Dubeer, Dassu, Besham which all are main villages. In other parts 30 to 50 per cent houses are still unchecked by the relief giving agencies.

As there is no co-ordination between the government functionaries and in the absence of proper relief control centre or crisis management cell, no relief work has been carried out.

Relief goods collected by the individuals and organizations are likely to be wasted and could not be reached to the victims if timely planning is not carried out.

A large number of donors from the country are making efforts to find out the proper spot or responsible to guide them and to collect relief goods collected by them for onward distribution.

Provincial government has established a cell but it is at Peshawar and can not communicate with other parts of Hazara.
