KARACHI: KPT official released as reference withdrawn

KARACHI, Oct 11: The administrative judge of accountability courts, Mrs Qaiser Iqbal, ordered on Tuesday the release of the senior public relation officer of the Karachi Port Trust, who was arrested three months ago by the National Accountability Bureau for alleged misappropriation of Rs11 million.

The judge ordered the release of Kafeel Ahmed, who was taken into custody on July 6, on an application filed under Section 9-C of the NAB Ordinance by the special public prosecutor.

The SPP submitted before the court that the NAB authorities had closed the case against the KPT PRO as no material was found against him.

However, the NAB filed a corruption reference against co-accused Habib Ahmed Khan, KPT’s official photographer.

Earlier, it was alleged that the two accused withdrew a total of Rs17 million from the bank against the bills, purportedly paid to different photo development and processing laboratories from 1993 to July 2002.

It was alleged that accused Kafeel Ahmed misappropriated Rs8 million and accused Habib Ahmed Khan Rs3 million.

FRAUD CASE: The Accountability Court No 1, headed by judge Mrs Qaiser Iqbal put off the hearing of a Rs298 million fraud case against four officials of the Pakistan Post Office after partly hearing the arguments of the special public prosecutor.

The judge fixed Wednesday for the next hearing when SPP Syed Nadeem Hussain Shah would continue arguments.

Former post master Izhar Hussain Siddiqui, former post master general, Sindh, Ehsan Baseer Shaikh, Arshad Ali, Mohammed Hussain and Sohail Siddique have been charged with misappropriation of funds in the City Courts Post Office.

IMTIAZ SHAIKH: Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the anti-terrorism court No 5 put off hearing of a kidnapping for ransom case against sacked provincial revenue minister Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh and others till Oct 20.

The judge directed the defence counsel, Shaukat Zubedi, to ensure appearance of Imtiaz Shaikh during the next hearing.

Accused Mehfooz Ahmed, the only arrested accused in the case, Imtiaz Shaikh and co-accused Agha Asghar, Nasir Mehmood, Mehmood Zakir, Mohammad Ashfaq and Ateeq Ahmed Siddiqui were booked by the Korangi police on March 28 on the complaint of Zafar Iqbal, who alleged that his 17-year-old son was kidnapped on June 28, 2003 on the directives of the sacked minister.

The complainant alleged that the accused kidnapped Umer Iqbal from his house in Qayyumabad and demanded Rs1.5 million from his wife for the release of his son. He further alleged that the accused released his son after receiving Rs700,000 at the house of Imtiaz Shaikh.

Imtiaz Sheikh was granted interim bail by the Sindh High Court, which put off the matter for confirmation of the bail. The remaining accused persons have been declared absconders.

EXTORTION CASE: Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC-5 put off hearing of an extortion case against six alleged associates of Arshad Puppu after recording the statement of a prosecution witness.

Accused Riaz son of Sahib, Asghar Niazi son of Qasim, Arshad son of Ashraf, Shahnawaz son of Luqman, Javed son of Abdur Rehman and Nadim son of Shakoor, have been charged with extortion.

The judge fixed Wednesday for the next hearing after special public prosecutor Mazhar Qayyum partly examined ASI Saeed Ahmed Khan, one of the members of the raiding police party.
