KARACHI: Lyariites ask new town nazim to solve problems

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 11: Residents of the Baghdadi Union Council have urged the newly elected local body representatives of the area to direct their efforts towards solving chronic water shortage.

In an appeal sent to elected representatives, the members of mohallah committee said water shortage had become a very serious problem and they had been suffering from it for a long time.

In most localities, water tankers are the only source for getting drinking water. It is even more difficult to pay Rs300 for a tanker, forcing many people to go to other areas in search for water early every morning.

They also pointed out that the distribution system in the town was also poor.

In some parts of Lyari, when water does come, it usually comes after midnight for a few hours on particular days; therefore, most of the residents in the affected areas, instead of sleeping, are seen waiting for water at night.

And when water does come, it is usually polluted and mixed with sewage coming from defective and leaking drainage lines making it unusable for drinking and cooking purposes.

In the memorandum, the mohallah committee said that residents of the town had been facing numerous problems and were living without basic amenities for the past several decades.

It said frequent load-shedding had also made the lives of residents miserable.

Citizens of the town have been facing round-the-clock load-shedding for the past several years.

Most roads in the town are old and had been constructed several years ago. They are in a bad condition and become even more dangerous in the rainy seasons.

The memorandum also pointed out that sewerage system in the area had almost collapsed. In most areas, cracks had appeared in the old-age sewerage pipelines, and sewage was getting mixed with drinking water lines.

Area people through the memorandum called upon the newly elected town nazim to bring an improvement in the town’s service delivery system by according top priority to the solution of civic problems.
