KARACHI: CM sees off 18 trucks loaded with relief goods
KARACHI, Oct 11: Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim on Monday night saw off 18 trucks loaded with relief goods sent on behalf of Sindh government for quake-affected areas.
The chief minister said as an immediate consignment the Sindh government was sending 10,000 bags of atta, 6000 blankets, 4000 packets of ration and medicines worth Rs1.8 million.
He said that the Sindh government had already announced Rs10 million relief amount each for Punjab and NWFP, Azad Kashmir, Islamabad and northern areas besides Rs10 million contributed towards President’s Relief Fund, and the total commitment of Rs60 million was being released forthwith.
He said that Sindh government was also sending 10,000 packets of dates and 10,000 packets of baked gram while packets containing atta, rice, sugar, ghee and tea would also be transported subsequently.
He made a fervent appeal to philanthropists, welfare organizations and other people to come out with help for their brothers and sisters in distress.
Arbab Rahim described the spirit of people as exemplary and expressed hope that the nation would come out of this hour of trial.
Relief Commiss-ioner Anwar Hyder, DCO Fazlur Rehman, EDO Relief and officials of various organizations were also present.
ARMY: Commander Corps Lt-Gen Syed Athar Ali visited the relief goods centre at PAF Museum and paid tributes to Karachiites for showing an overwhelming response and donating a huge volume of relief goods and cash for the victims of earthquake.
He said that hundreds of volunteers including students were working hand in hand with the jawans and officers of armed forces at six collection centres to pack and label the goods. “The response of people is overwhelming and everybody is eager to contribute in this relief work. The volunteers are working day and night during fasting. I must give my best compliments to these volunteers,” he added.
The Corps Commander said, “We have been transporting these goods through C-130 and PIA Boeing. In the last two days, 13 sorties of C-130 and Boeing have been made to transport relief goods to Chaklala while 12 sorties will be made today (Tuesday). These aircrafts are making non-stop sorties, carrying cargo round-the-clock. So far, 100 trawlers and trucks have been dispatched while more will be sent in future,” he said.
Similarly, two trains with 40 bogies loaded with relief goods would be sent to earthquake-hit areas on Wednesday.
About the distribution of relief goods among affectees, he said that the magnitude of damage was enormous and it was difficult to reach everybody in the affected areas. Army jawans were working round-the-clock to open roads in order to facilitate transportation and distribution of relief goods.
NAVY: Pakistan Navy is standing firm by the government with dedication and commitment to serve the nation in difficult time and has joined hands in carrying out relief operations in quake-hit areas.
According to ISPR, the first consignment of relief goods was dispatched from Naval Complex on Tuesday. Pakistan Navy Women Association President Begum Vice-Admiral Mohammad Haroon saw off the dispatch.
In all, Pakistan Navy has established 17 relief centres working round-the-clock to collect relief goods in Karachi. So far, 30 trucks loaded with relief goods had been dispatched. —APP
