RABBANI: Leader of Opposition in the Senate and Deputy Secretary-General of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Mian Raza Rabbani on Monday said the nation was facing the consequences of perhaps one of the gravest natural calamities in the history of Pakistan.
“This is an hour of national grief and the nation stands united in the face of devastation. It is at such moments in the history that the mettle of the nations is tested, particularly when as in our case the inadequacies of the system and the inherent weaknesses in crisis management have been exposed.”
“The chairperson, Ms Bhutto, has directed high mobilization of the party at all levels and directed that relief camps be immediately set up throughout the country at the district level. A number of such camps have already started to function. “The civil society must rise to the occasion and fill the gap that has been created by the failure of the system.”
Meanwhile, Naheed Khan, political secretary to the PPP chairperson, Benazir Bhutto, has criticized the Peshawar Corps Commander’s assertion that only 1,000 people had perished in the quake and the figures given by the media were simply exaggeration.
In a statement, she said the corps commander’s statement reflected his insensitivity because the people were facing the worst kind of catastrophe in the history of the country.
