KARACHI: Students hold protest against new policy: KU admissions

KARACHI, Oct 10: A number of students under an alliance opposing new admission policy of the University of Karachi held demonstration on the campus during teaching hours on Monday.
A source on the campus said that a rally was taken out by an alliance of association’s working for the welfare of students hailing from the Northern areas including Gilgit and Sindh, Punjab and Frontier provinces.
The protesting students were of the view that the varsity should withdraw a recent recommendation of the council disallowing the students not in possession of matriculation and intermediate education certificates from the institutions of Karachi to apply under regular K category.
The students group during the demonstration also shattered sole glass pane and windows at the political science department, while classes were in progress. The group persuaded for a boycott of classes at a couple of departments.
The activities continued for at least two hours, but no major untoward incident was reported, said a KU official, adding that students in the later part of the day submitted memorandum to the vice-chancellor and the academic council for a review in the previous stance of the varsity.
It was learnt that a meeting of the students’ group and vice-chancellor was held on the issue on Saturday as well.
Meanwhile, following a tussle between the bus staff of the varsity and some students in the morning, the regular bus service for the residential areas of students was suspended on Monday afternoon. The staff and drivers denied to ply on roads the point buses to residential areas in protest, said another official, adding that buses would ply on roads as per schedule on Tuesday onwards.
