Karakoram Highway opens to light traffic

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, Oct 9: The Northern Area was again struck by the slight jolts of earthquake on Sunday at least for four times from 4:00am to 3:00pm in different intervals but caused no major loss.

The Karakoram Highway between Gilgit and Rawalpindi has been restored for small vehicles on Sunday which was blocked due to heavy landslide caused by the earthquake on Saturday. The frontier works organisation is busy to sweep the mud slides and rocks from the highway near Pakistan-China border but it could be restored on Monday.

The sources said that Gilgit-Chitral road was still blocked near Dahimal and Phander areas but it has been reopened up to Gupis tehsil by the locals and stranded passengers.

They said that due to disrupted telecommunication system in the region, the reports about the losses to human life and property could not be obtained from the hilly areas located in the Himalayan range like Astore, Diamer and Kohistan where the link roads have also been eroded by the jolts on Saturday.

The sources said that dozens of houses have been destroyed in Ghizer district while hundreds of residential outlets have developed cracks throughout the region.
