Blankets, food a priority, says Aziz


ISLAMABAD, Oct 9: The federal cabinet on Sunday decided to take special measures to ensure provision of food and blankets to the earthquake victims on priority.

This was decided at a special meeting of the cabinet held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz at the PM House.

Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Mr Aziz said the cabinet had decided to make provision of basic food items and blankets to the quake-stricken people a priority.

He said all agencies, including the Army and civil organizations, had been fully mobilized to provide food to the victims and expedite the rescue work.

He said the provision of food, medicine and blankets would be provided to the affected areas according to the need with the cooperation of the provincial governments.

RESCUE OPERATION: After every five minutes a rescue helicopter lands at a quake affected village for providing relief, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmad said on Sunday.

Overall 20 helicopters are engaged in relief operation in the quake hit areas. More helicopters are needed as most of the roads have been damaged, he told PTV, CNN, ARY.

The minister commended the efforts of locals, armed forces in relief operation. Most of the people have already been rescued from the rubble in AJK. However only few people may be inside the rubble.

More troops have been moved in for speeding up the rescue operation. Hospitals are on high alert to tackle the emergent situation, he added.—APP
