KARACHI: Profiteers fined in various markets


KARACHI, Oct 9: Special Magistrate and Caretaker Orangi Town, Qamar Sheikh, fined 12 shopkeepers of Rs5,300 for selling edibles at higher than government-fixed rates.

Four profiteers were arrested, who were later released after due warning and receipt of fines.

Seventeen shopkeepers were warned to display price list at some prominent place of their shops.

The caretaker also visited different complaint centres set up in markets of the town and monitored their functioning. Complaints can be lodged on phone numbers 6661321 and 6697869 at the centre, set up at the Central Office of Orangi Town.

LANDHI TOWN: A team, lead by Landhi Town Nazim Muhammad Nazeer Lakhani, conducted a surprise raid to check price lists at Dawood Chowrangi on Sunday.

Many pushcart vendors, who were selling their wares without displaying price lists, took to the heels by seeing the raid team. However, the raid team managed to arrest five persons and fine another 20 for selling vegetables and fruits on inflated rates.

It may be recalled that up till now some 20 profiteers have been arrested in the town besides 41 others are fined.

The Landhi Town Municipal Administration has formed a vigilance committee headed by Abdul Rauf Jamali and comprised of TO Planning Amjad Zaidi, ATO Solid Waste Akhtar Raza and ATO Health Abdul Qadeer to check prices during the holy month of Ramazan.

Overall 16 complaint centres have been set up in the town to check prices of daily-use items. One complaint centre is set up in every union council and four in big markets, besides eight Ramazan special stalls are set up in markets, where vegetables and fruits are being sold on concessional rates.

BIN QASIM: The caretaker of Bin Qasim Town, Manzoor Hussain Abbasi, visited various markets and shops in UC-4 of Bin Qasim town and check price lists.

The team also checked quality of various goods being sold. Some shopkeepers were given warning to display price lists and sell goods according to them. — PPI/APP
