UN working on emergency response

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 8: Following a massive earthquake in Pakistan that affected Afghanistan and India also, the United Nations is working with the governments of these countries on an emergency response, a UN spokesperson said on Saturday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is exploring ways in which the UN could assist in the efforts required to support relief and rescue operations and in subsequent recovery and reconstruction,” the spokesman for UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said. The spokesman said Mr Annan was deeply saddened by the loss of life and destruction.
