KARACHI, Oct 8: Some 685 workers of the Indus Jute Mills, Dhabeji, have been registered under the social security scheme, and they and their dependents have started receiving social security facilities.

This was stated in a report of the Sindh Social Security, Landhi Directorate, sent to Commissioner SESSI Asif Marghoub.

The workers of the Indus Jute Mills were not getting social security facilities since long and unrest was growing among them.

The matter came up in a meeting with industrialists during a visit by Provincial Industries Minister Adil Siddiqui to Dhabeji, whereafter the mills management started payment of increased social security contribution from July 2005. The contribution grew from Rs60,000 to Rs143,000 a month.

SESSI registered the mill’s 685 workers and started providing them benefits.

It may be mentioned that SESSI has setup a 10-bed social security medical centre near the mill on the National Highway, which has been upgraded on the directive of the minister industries with facilities of X-ray, ultrasound, ECG and maternity care.—APP
