KARACHI: Prosecution concludes evidence: Rangers van attack case

KARACHI, Oct 8: The prosecution in the Rangers van attack case against two activists of the banned Jundullah group concluded on Saturday evidence, with the examination of the investigation officer before an anti-terrorism court.

Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-2 put off hearing of the case after the deposition by Inspector Mohammed Riaz, who investigated the case. The judge reserved the cross-examination of the IO till Oct 15.

Ataur Rehman and Shahzad Ahmed Bajwa have been charged with attacking a ranger’s mobile van near Baloch Colony bridge on March 19, 2004.

The accused are being represented by M R Syed and special public prosecutor Maula Bux Bhatti is appearing on behalf of the state.

RANSOM-CUM-MURDER CASE: Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3 put off the hearing of the kidnapping and murder case of a young man after recording the statement of three prosecution witnesses.

The judge fixed Oct 11 for the next hearing after the depositions of Judicial Magistrate Erum Jahangir and two policemen -– Ghulam Haider and Sohrab Khan.

The judicial magistrate submitted that she had conducted the identification parade of the accused, who were identified by six prosecution witnesses. She said she had also recorded the confessional statements of accused Jabbar and Imran.

The 30-year-old victim, father of an infant girl, was kidnapped on Oct 10, 2004 when he was on his way on his motorcycle in North Nazimabad. His bullet-riddled body was found at a desolate place near Sohrab Goth on Oct 12 after the victim’s family failed to pay the ransom.

S. M. Iqbal appeared for accused Imran, Khawaja Naveed for accused Fayyaz, and Syed Mohammed Ali Shah for accused Rehan and Jabbar. Special public prosecutor Naimat Ali Randhawa represented the state.

According to prosecution, accused Fayyaz was arrested with some other suspects on Oct 19, 2004 in North Nazimabad by a team of anti-violent crime cell (AVCC), who had gone in the vicinity to arrest some other suspects. A Kalashnikov rifle and other weapons were recovered from the suspects.

Later, during the interrogation, accused Fayyaz revealed to have kidnapped and murdered Mohammed Ali along with his accomplices. The police on his lead arrested other accused on different dates and also recovered the victim’s bike.
