QUETTA, Oct 7: A division bench of the Balochistan High Court has asked the chief minister to issue directives that all appointments in government schools should be made through the Public Service Commission.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Amanullah Khan Yasinzai and Justice Kelash Nath Kohli said that the government was not abiding by the directives of the court and asked the provincial secretary, education, and director of the education department, Balochistan, to appear before the court in the next hearing.

The court said that the government had been directed several times that recruitment of teachers in government schools should be made through the Balochistan Public Service Commission but the authorities concerned were not showing respect to the directives of the court which was tantamount to contempt of court.

The court issued directives to the chief minister on the petition filed by a citizen, Saleem advocate, against the deteriorating standard of education in the Balochistan University and other educational institutions.

The Council of Balochistan University of Information and Technology produced the records of appointments in the university that were made on the basis of merit. However, the court observed that the relevant records would be reviewed but directed that appointments should be made purely on the basis of merit.

The hearing was adjourned till Nov 15.
