Muttahida to back PML candidates

By Amanullah Kasi

QUETTA, Oct 5: The Balochistan chapter of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement has decided to support the PML-backed candidates for the posts of nazim of the city and two towns in the local body polls on Thursday.

Accompanied by the contesting candidates, MQM provincial organizer Waqar Ahmed Baloch said at a news conference at the press club on Wednesday that the Haq Parast panel had taken part in the first and second phases of the polls in the province and won seats.

He said that the party had fielded the candidates for the posts of nazim of the city, and Zarghoon and Chiltan towns but the provincial body in consultation with the MQM high command decided to withdraw its candidates in favour of the PML.

He claimed that the decision had been taken to strengthen ties with coalition partners at the centre and in Sindh and the Haq Parast panel would now back Mohammad Rahim Kakar for the post of city nazim, Dr Aziz Qureshi for Zarghoon town and Mir Ismail for Chiltan town.

Answering a question, he said that 22 councillors of his party had been elected in the city and towns. A similar number of independent councillors would also vote for PML nominees, he added.

HASHISH SEIZED: The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) arrested an alleged drug trafficker, seized 297kg of hashish and impounded two vehicles during a raid here on Wednesday.

A statement by the ANF said that acting on a tip, a patrol raided a house in the Killi Mohammad Shehi Sariab mills in the suburbs of the city and found charas hidden in a four-wheel drive vehicle and in a pickup.

A case has been registered against the accused, the statement added.

FOUR KILLED: Armed men on two motorcycles opened fire on a car near Killi Shahjehan in the Kuchlak area on Wednesday and killed four people.

An official of the Kuchlak police station confirmed the incident and said that three of the people killed, Ajab Khan, Nazar Jan and Kala Khan, were in the vehicle and the fourth, Rasool Bakhsh, was a pedestrian.

He said that Ajab and Nazar were brothers and belonged to Pishin district.

MAN KILLED: Unidentified men killed a man, Mohammad Qasim, on the Sabzal Road on Wednesday.
