Nine jail officials suspended

LAHORE, Oct 4: Inspector General of Prisons, Punjab, Capt Sarfraz Mufti (retired) on Tuesday suspended nine jail officials, including a deputy superintendent of Sialkot jail, on charges of corruption.

Official sources said here on receiving corruption complaints, the IG constituted a two-member committee headed by DIG (headquarters) Abdul Sattar Aajiz with Lahore Camp Jail superintendent Naveed Ashraf as member to probe the charges.

On a surprise visit of the jail, the team found the corruption allegations against the officials, including the superintendent Yusuf Ghauri, to be true. In the light of the inquiry report, the IG ordered immediate suspension of deputy superintendent Azhar Khan, chief warder Zakaullah, head warders Ashraf and Yousaf, warders Amir, Younas, Razzaq and Sarwar.

Meanwhile, the report has been sent to the Punjab home secretary for proceedings under efficiency and discipline rules.

The IG, on a directive of the chief minister, has circulated the following telephone and fax numbers of all DIGs and IG office for the convenience of the people, to lodge any complaints on the working or conduct of the jailers, to help the department ensure prompt redressal.
