ISLAMABAD, Oct 2: Atif Ashraf and Bilal Asad stroked fine half centuries and Sajid Ali picked up four wickets to help Diamond Club land the NBP-ICA Inter-club super cricket championship with an 82-run defeat of XI Star.
Ashraf hit up 88 with eight fours while Bilal struck 71, their innings helping their side post 287 in 48.3 overs at the Diamond cricket ground.
Mohammad Nadeem also did well in cracking an unbeaten 45.
The wickets were snapped up by Rizwan Sabir, Imran Khateeb and Asim Aqeel, all of them taking two wickets apiece.
XI Star looked well on their way to overhauling the rivals’ total with Fayyaz Ahmed (75) and Danish Hanif (53) leading the way. But slow left-armer Sajid Ali then captured four for 26 to dent XI Star’s hopes. IX Star were eventually dismissed for 205.
For his fine bowling, Sajid was not only adjudged Man-of-the-Match but was also declared the best bowler of the tournament. The award for the best batsman was also claimed by Diamond for whom Bilal Asad took the honour.
Raheel Majeed of Asif Memorial was declared the best all-rounder, the best wicket-keeper went to IX Star’s Naeem Anjum while Sarwar Khan of XI Star won the best fielder prize.
The winners, besides the trophy, were also awarded a cash prize of Rs30,000 with the runners-up getting Rs20,000.
The tournament that began on Aug 14 featured a total of 35 matches.
