Unfancied Who Dares grabs Inaugural Cup

LAHORE, Oct 2: The Floodlit Racecourse at the Lahore Race Club (LRC) was formally inaugurated by the Punjab Chief Minister, Ch. Pervaiz Elahi at a simple ceremony held during the day and night racing when a card of nine races was gone through on Sunday.

Four cup events featuring the 5th Lahore Winter Meeting were held during a festival of equine sports to mark the opening of the floodlit racing track, the first in the sub-continent.

The chief minister watched a few races and presented cups to the winning owners.

Amidst loud applause from the record gathering of racing public, he announced a grant of rupees three million for development work of the LRC sporting activity and for the provision of more facilities.

The feature event, the Inaugural Cup, a Class IV Division I handicap race was won by long shot bay filly Who Dares, ridden by the riding boy Shahid Mustafa.

The filly beat Ponche by five lengths. High Fire and Millennium Count completed the board.

The supporting event, the Samsol Cup was annexed by bay English filly Tortuette after a fine front-running display.

Ridden by the riding boy Azhar Hussain Tortuette beat Geespot by a distance. Balinda and Golden Drift completed the frame, among five runners.

The second supporting event, the A.K.D Cup was won by long shot Lucky Winner, who beat Lucky Murad by six lengths.

Ridden by jockey Salah-ud-Din II, Lucky Winner shot like an arrow in the straight to claim the cup easily.

Height Of Happiness and Poly Next completed the frame among eight runners.

Earlier, the Day and Night Cup was won by the bay filly Baker Eye, who beat Newton by two lengths. Jockey M. Zeeshan was the most successful jockey when he rode home three winners in a row.

He sailed in Baker Eye, Zoro and Trace Hit to complete a hat-trick of victories.

Riding boy Azhar Hussain also scored a double. He rode home Rough Tough and Tortuette.

Trainer Mubarik Ali was the most successful among trainers.

He sent out two winners in Baker Eye and Trace Hit.
