HORSE-RACING: Mir Sab captures Stakes Cup in style

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Oct 2: Living up to his current form and fitness, two-year-old half-bred, Mir Sab, lifted the Sire Produce Stakes Cup in the Winter Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Having been beaten to second place by Safari Queen in the last meeting, Mir Sab picked up the spoils winning by 4 ½ lengths in convincing fashion. Change of jockey by the owner also proved beneficial.

Abdul Aziz piloted home Mir Sab in a pack of nine contenders in the five furlongs second race of the day. Last time it was ridden by Fateh Muhammad.

Moon Raker and Go Piyaray, both two-year-old colts, secured second and third positions, respectively.

Aziz had another winner on three-year-old filly, Fantasia, in the seventh and concluding race to perform double. The six furlongs race restricted to Pakistani horses in class III and IV, featured five runners after three-year-old filly, Makina, was disqualified at the starting point.

Half-bred, Super Conqueror and thorough-bred Pakistani, Harry Potter, settled for the remaining two places.

Jockey Ghulam Shabbir II also shared the days’ honours by performing double in two back-to-back races. After sprinting three-year-old colt, Sher Garh to victory in the fifth race, he romped home four-year-old filly, Ouija Board, in the next.

Bright And early, a three-year-old filly which recently arrived from Lahore, created quite a stir by winning honours in the fourth race.

Owned by Mr Tauseef Ali Siddiqui, the filly was among those who also ran in the last race.

Earlier, the first race of the day saw seven-year-old mare, Royal Promise, winning the honours while Chand Aya dominated the third race.

The next race meeting will be held on Oct 5.
