BUJUMBURA, Oct 2: Burundian soldiers killed 17 fighters from the country’s only remaining rebel group in the heaviest fighting to take place there since a new president took office in August, the army said on Sunday.
The army launched raids against the Hutu Forces for National Liberation (FNL) on Saturday in the district of Kanyosha, where some of the rebels have been hiding.
“The operation lasted the whole day. Seventeen rebels died and their 10 guns and an important quantity of ammunition were seized,” army spokesman Major Adolphe Manirakiza told Reuters.
