LAHORE, Oct 1: The Lahore Race Club (LRC) is holding a festival day of racing marking the formal inauguration of its floodlit racecourse when the 5th Lahore Winter Meeting gets under way, featuring four cup events at the lush green grass track glittering with lights on Sunday.
The main event, as the name suggests, will be the Inaugural Cup, a class IV handicap race over 1400m.
It has seven contenders, if there are no last-minute withdrawals.
Of them three come into reckoning at once when one looks at the handicap.
On recent performances and form the contenders are: Ponche, Millennium Count and Who Dares. They have already captured the attention of Lahore racing public but none has dominated yet.
The trio has met once and are on course for another battle.
In their previous clash on Sept 4 last Ponche had beaten Millennium Count by half-a-length, who nosed out Who Dares by a head’s margin.
The trio meet again which is expected to be a thrilling encounter for supremacy.
The distance suits Ponche, a four-year-old colt from Polinesso out-of-Affifa.
The handicap favours Millennium Count, a ten-year-old gelding from Shadad out-of-Dam by High Spot. The three-year-old filly (Fair Play-Lady Chinchilla) gets the advantage of being younger.
By any standards the race is going to be a very thrilling and contesting event, the ninth and last in racing order.
The AKD Cup, a class III handicap race seems a one horse race looking a fun for the majestic filly, Poly Nest. The filly from Polinesso out-of-Cinciatti, with five victories in her bag has been one of the hottest subjects in Lahore racing history.
The eighth event, the Samsol Cup to be gone over 1400m looks an open race. It is an exclusively an all-foreign animals race. Of the six contenders four are on chance.
They are: Top weight Carolous Court, Golden Drift, Tortuette and Banzine. One owner, Syed Tasweer Hussain Shah, has two runners, Golden Drift and Banzine and either of two should win with Tortuette as challenger.
Three-year-old filly Baker Eye (Bakers Gate-Affifa) looks set for lifting the Day And Night Racing Cup, a class V division I, handicap race over the sprinting distance of 1200m. Green Street, Queen Of Saba and Well Minister should be her challengers.
The opener and the second race of the card are packed with sprinters and look open affairs in which winner picking may prove a difficult task for the punters.
Three-year-old colt Rough Tough looks a sitter in the third race.
The way he ran second behind Opening Partner on Sept 18, there seems hardly any competition with his 13 opponents in the third race.
Twice unlucky colt Legend will be going all out once again to make amends and win the fifth race. He has only to beat Penalty Corner and Zoro.
Three-year-old filly Trace Hit should run away with the sixth race defeating her ten rivals.
Her stablemate Miss Photogenic, Brave Majesty and unlucky Like A Hero should fight for the frame. A lengthy card of seven races will be decided in the afternoon and after the sunset in floodlights.
The first three races will be run over 1200m while the other six including the four cup events will be contested over 1400 metres.
The first race will start at 3pm.
