KARACHI, Oct 1: Pakistan Table Tennis Federation (PTTF) has chalked out an ambitious four-year programme aimed at uplift of the game at the grassroots level across the country.
“PTTF wants to see 5000 registered players, 400 tables and at least 100 centres to revive the golden era of sport in the country,” president PTTF, S. M. Sibtain, told a news conference on Saturday.
Unfolding details of the first executive committee meeting of the newly elected body held on Sept 29, he said the PTTF would procure 20 court mats for organising national events and camps in the country.
According to him, import of a mat cost little over Rs. 0.2 million.
He said the plan envisaged six-months targets, its implementation and monitoring.
The PTTF president said special emphasis would be laid on grooming coaches with the support of Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) and International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Former player, Irfanullah, has been appointed convener of the committee.
He disclosed a committee would be entrusted with the task to conduct a survey of infrastructure at the district level.
The executive committee, he said, also approved international commitments besides finalizing domestic calendar of activities.
As far as international events were concerned, Pakistan would feature in Commonwealth Games from March 15 to 26, 2006, SAF Games from April 18 to 28, 2006 and World Team Championship from April 24 to May 1, 2006.
Domestic events include junior coaching camp at Islamabad from Oct 17, National junior table tennis championship at Peshawar from Nov 16 to 19, All-Pakistan tournament at Karachi from Nov 23 to 27, National table tennis championship at Karachi from Dec 24 to 29, Habib Bank Gold Cup in Feb next besides holding an umpires clinic.
To a question, he said the annual grant of the PTTF was rupees one million.
