Death of worker sparks protest
SUKKUR, Oct 1: Hundreds of people took out a protest procession in the Site area on Saturday following the death of Saghir Ahmed Qureshi, an employee of the Hamid Flour Mills.
The protesters observed a sit-in outside the mill due to which flour business came to a standstill.
They said the sit-in would continue till registration of case against the culprits.
Niaz Qureshi, the father of the deceased, told newsmen that Saghir had been murdered.
He said they would not allow the mill to operate till registration of a case against the culprits.
The site police detained four employees of the flour mills who were nominated by the father of the deceased but declined to disclose their names.
Police said no one had turned up to register case as yet.
Sources said an inquiry was underway by high police officials and if the death was proved a murder then an FIR would be registered.
Dr Yasin of the civil hospital who carried out post-mortem said no evidence of electric current was found.
He said Saghir sustained a head injury which resulted into death.
The mill management said the worker was electrocuted while working over a machine.
WAGE AWARD: Adviser to the Sindh chief minister on information, Salahuddin Haider, has said that the Sindh government is pursuing implementation of the 7th Wage Board Award.
He said in the first inter-provincial conference of the information ministers in Peshawar, the NWFP and Sindh had taken a principled stand by passing a resolution for its implementation in letter and spirit.
He was talking to newsmen at the Sukkur circuit house on Saturday.
He said the resolution had called upon the federal government and the provincial governments for linking the Wage Board Award with the realization of advertisements.
Mr Haider said policies of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had raised voice in favour of journalists for the implementation of wage award in the National Assembly.
He promised for arranging inter-provincial visits for journalists and held out an assurance for quick processing of the case of Sukkur journalists’ housing colony which was pending with the Sindh irrigation department.
He directed Information Secretary Fasihuddin Khan for taking up the housing colony issue with the secretary irrigation.
