LB system to strengthen democracy: minister

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Oct 1: Federal Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Sherpao has said that the local government system has not only stabilised democratic institutions but also instilled awareness amongst the people.

Speaking at the gatherings of councillors in Shabqadar and Charsadda, Mr Sherpao said the system would help prepare the masses to play a vital role in national affairs and development of the country.

He lauded President Gen Pervez Musharraf for taking revolutionary measures for the local bodies and said that he had strengthened the local government system by holding local body elections for second term.

He said that in past the rulers had only raised slogans of the local government system but Gen Musharraf had taken practical steps in this regard.

He said that the system had functioned for four years successfully and high public participation in the recent elections showed people’s trust in the system.

Mr Sherpao said that in the third phase of the elections, the elected representatives should exercise their right to vote with wisdom to elect honest and dedicated people.

He said: “We believe in positive politics and our politics is based on truthfulness.” He said that his opponents had hoodwinked the people through false promises and now the masses had identified their real faces.

Paying tribute to the late Hayat Mohammad Khan Sherpao, he said that the martyred leader had laid down his life in the cause of down-trodden classes.

He vowed to follow the footsteps of Mr Hayat and render sacrifices for the people. He said that he would ‘even lay down his life for the cause of the oppressed people but would never compromise on their rights.’

He added that the Pakistan People’s Party would promote the mission of Mr Hayat which would relieve the people from hardships.

He said that the alliance of four parties in the local bodies had been formed for the development of the locality.

He said it was a natural alliance which had won the general election in 2002 in Charsadda and it would win in the third phase of the local body election on the basis of its performances.

He said that they would properly utilise development funds for wellbeing of the people.

MNA Maulana Gohar Ali, MPAs Sikandar Hayat Sherpao and Alamzeb Umerzai and the candidates for posts of Charsadda district and tehsil nazim and others also spoke on the occasion.
