ISLAMABAD, Oct 1: As many as 1,106,348 taxpayers filed income tax returns up to Sept 30 with the income tax department across the country, as against 968,051 returns filed during the same period last year, indicating an increase of 14 per cent.
Spokesman for the Central Board of Revenue Habib Fakhruddin told reporters here on Saturday that 599,903 non-salaried taxpayers and 506,445 salaried taxpayers had filed income tax returns as compared to 523,498 by non-salaried taxpayers and 444,553 by salaried taxpayers the previous year.
He said the amount of tax paid with returns up to Sept 30 this year stood at Rs4.2 billion as against Rs5.7 billion in the same period last year, indicating a decrease of 26.3 per cent.
Mr Fakhruddin said the decrease in revenue was partly because of a change in the tax year in some cases, leading to changes in filing pattern, and partly because of heavy capital investment in some corporate entities, leading to huge depreciation claims and consequent tax losses.
