19 killed in Kashmir


SRINAGAR, Sept 30: Nineteen people were killed in the latest violence in occupied Kashmir, four of them soldiers gunned down in a firefight with militants, officials said on Friday.

Two Mujahideen also died in the early morning gunbattle, in northern Machil sector, army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Vijay Batra said. “Three other soldiers were injured during the fighting,” Col Batra said.

Meanwhile, Indian troops shot dead nine Mujahideen in four encounters in Doda, Poonch, Udhampur and Anantnag late on Thursday and early Friday, a police spokesman said.

Another militant was killed in northern Kupwara district.

A soldier was killed in an ambush by militants in Doda and a girl and a man were gunned down by suspected militants in Pulwama and Anantnag districts, police said.—AFP
