First round defeats for Shahid, Mansoor


KARACHI, Sept 30: Eighth seed Shahid Zaman of Pakistan was sent off packing in the first round of Dunlop Hungarian Open squash championship when he was stunned by English qualifier Daryl Selby on Friday in Budapest.

According to the details made available here, Shahid after winning two games 11-8, 11-9 lost his rhythm and awarded the next three games to Daryl, who is just ranked inside world’s top 100, went on to topple the top ranked Pakistani 11-6, 11-3, 11-2 in a 48 minutes encounter to enter the last eight stages.

Daryl will now meet compatriot and tournament favourite Peter Nicol in the quarterfinal.

Nicol beat the event’s other English qualifier Joey Barrington 11-7, 11-5, 11-3 with ease in 34 minutes.

Pakistan’s last hope was shattered when Pakistan No2 Mansoor Zaman fell to Olli Tuominen from Finland in the longest first round match of the $50,000 PSA Tour event.

Tuominen fought from 2-1 down to overcome unseeded Mansoor Zaman 11-10, 6-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9 in 57 minutes.

The Finn will now meet England’s James Willstrop, an 11-4, 11-6, 10-11, 11-5 victor over Malaysia’s Ong Beng Hee.
