Pre-poll rigging in full swing, alleges Qaim

By Our Correspondent

KHAIRPUR, Sept 30: The Sindh president of the Pakistan People’s Party, Qaim Ali Shah, and the ADP district nazim candidate, Nafisa Shah, have alleged that the government is getting involved in the pre-poll rigging before the third and final phase of the local body elections.

They were speaking at a press conference on Thursday.

They alleged that the ministers were using the district administration and police to harass the opponent councillors in Khairpur.

The two leaders said that police registered a fake case against the brother of ADP councillor from Nara taluka, Noor Khatoon Shar, and raided the houses of five women councillors three days ago. Police arrested their brothers and husbands and took away buffaloes and motorbikes with them, they alleged.

Qaim Ali Shah said that in other provinces like Punjab and NWFP, the provincial government and the Election Commission took strong action against the ministers if they were found guilty of intervention in the election process.

But in Sindh, a provincial minister had continuously been working against the ADP and was involved in violating the code of conduct of the polls, he said, but no one either the provincial government of the EC was taking notice of it. He demanded immediate action against the minister.

Mr Shah said that the country was heading towards the presidential rule as the government had failed completely to conduct fair and free elections.

The government even transferred poor naib qasids from Khairpur to Karachi to pressurize their families to vote for the government-backed candidates, he alleged.

Replying to a question about suspension of some PPP office bearers, Qaim Ali Shah said that they did it according to the party policy and the suspended members had to appear before the party leaders in person if they wanted to appeal against the decision.

PROTEST: Traffic remained suspended for two hours on the Nara taluka road and the national highway, near Kotdiji, as the relatives of Bagh Ali Paliyo staged a demonstration, carrying his corpse, at the Sorah chowk on Thursday.

Bagh Ali Paliyo was killed while foiling a robbery when six armed men had tried to rob his truck near Hussainabad, Kotdiji taluka, on September 26.

The protesters raised slogans against police and said that police had failed to arrest the criminals.

The demonstrators dispersed when Mir family intervened in the situation.

KIDNAPPED: Two persons were kidnapped and one was injured in separate incidents.

Some unidentified armed men kidnapped two villagers, Niaz Lashari and Liaquat Punjabi, residents of Bangul Lashari village, Sobhodero taluka. The two villagers had gone to water their fields.

In another incident 12 unidentified armed men attacked Mian Khan village in Kingri taluka on Thursday night and beat Bakhshal Siyal up. They tried to kidnap him but failed as the villagers intervened in the situation.

Bakhshal was admitted to the Gambat hospital.

JSM: The activists of Jeay Sindh Mahaz observed a token hunger strike at the court road on Friday to oppose the construction of Kalabagh dam and greater Thal canal.

The activists, Yasin Junejo, Khan Mohammad Bhayo, Taufiq Soomro, Dilbar Bhutto and Sanaullah, were raising slogans against the World Bank.

Speaking on the occasion, JSM Vice Chairman Khan Mohammad Bhayo said that the construction of Kalabagh dam and greater Thal canal over the Indus river were against the international law and the people of Sindh would never accept them.

He said the government was trying to settle people in Sindh from Punjab to bring the province under their control.
