PESHAWAR, Sept 30: NWFP Senior Minister Sirajul Haq has said that people making claims of serving the masses did nothing for their welfare when they were in power. Instead, they worked for their own interests and did little for the people.
“People have chosen a devoted leadership with the spirit of serving the poor and in its three-year performance excels the 56-year regimes of the past,” he added.
He was addressing a councillors’ convention at Khal, Ranai, Timergara, three different remote mountainous areas of District Dir Lower, on Friday.
Sirajul Haq said that the MMA government was pursuing a well-conceived policy to ameliorate the lot of the downtrodden masses and provide them maximum relief.
He said there was a huge contrast between the past and present rulers as dacoits and outlaws found refuge in the Hujras of the former minister and assembly members. But now the supremacy of law and the rule of merit have been ensured.
He said peace and tranquillity prevailed due to the concrete and realistic steps of the MMA government while the pace of progress was speeded up due to financial management, cut on non-developmental expenditures and checking corruption despite the fact that the provincial government faced a lot of financial hardships and lack of resources.
The senior minister said that the people started feeling a pleasant change with the solid steps and reforms made in social sectors, including education, health, water supply and communication.
He reiterated the pledge to achieve provincial rights, including hydel-net profit of Rs18 billion annually and Rs345 billion in outstanding arrears, plus judicious distribution of resources under the new NFC award. He said that the NWFP government would then be able to relieve its debt burden, stand on its own feet and even extend financial support to the centre and the neighbouring country of Afghanistan.
Our Haripur correspondent adds: Mr Haq said that the LB candidates who were involved in horse-trading would be held accountable and punished accordingly.
“The provincial government is staying vigilant about such undemocratic practices and will not let anyone involved in buying of votes go scot-free,” he warned, speaking at the Councillors Convention arranged by the Al Khidmat group, Haripur, at a Local Park.
The convention was participated by nazims, naib nazims and lady councillors of different union councils.
The minister said that those who had indulged in horse-trading had no right to be called public representatives as the leadership was solely responsible for the rise and fall of a nation.
