KARACHI: Filthy water being supplied in Orangi

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 30: At a time when water-borne diseases have already claimed 12 lives in this month — 10 in Landhi Town and two in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town —complaints of contaminated water continue to pour in newspaper offices from other parts of the city as well.

Most of such alarming reports have been received from Orangi Town’s Sector 11 ˝ and Pakistan Bazaar whose water supply lines are reportedly passing through sewerage drains.

According to a former nazim of the town’s Union Council No 9, Mrs Shehnaz Aftab, around 800 houses of Benazir Colony were receiving contaminated water because an eight-inch pipeline was passing through a filthy drain near the old police station.

Similarly, another pipeline, which supplies water to about 2,000 houses in various localities of Pakistan Bazaar is also passing through a drain, she added.

She claimed that a number of localities of Orangi Town’s Sector 11˝ had been getting contaminated water for the last more than six months.

The former UC nazim deplored that although she had informed the KWSB officials about the lingering issue but to no avail.

The localities from where complaints of contaminated water are often received include Pakistan Bazaar, Benazir, Ali Nagar, Shamsi colonies and Makhdoom Shah Colony’s blocks J and M.
