Shuttlers return empty-handed

KARACHI, Sept 29: An eight-member Pakistan women’s badminton team for the first time returned empty-handed from Iran on Thursday after competing in the women’s Islamic Games.

According to results made available here, Pakistan went down in straight three games to host Iran in the play-off to secure fourth position in the team event.

Earlier, the green-shirts had defeated Azerbaijan and Armenia by an identical score of 3-0 and lost to Malaysia in their group.

In the pre-finals, Indonesia downed Pakistan while Malaysia overcame Iran.

As far as individual events were concerned, Pakistan No. 1, Aisha Akram, and Asma Butt could not go beyond pre-quarter finals while other players tasted defeats in the initial round.

Iran, Sudan, Jordan, Pakistan, Armenia, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Indonesia, Syria and Iraq featured in the badminton competition.

Besides the above two players, other members of the team were Uzma Butt, Farzana Saleem, Sara Khan, Saima Manzoor, Aimen Khan and Palwashah Bashir.
