Italy offers post-doctoral fellowships to Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD, Sept 29: The Italian government will provide 30 to 50 post-doctoral fellowships to Pakistani scholars in various fields of science and technology and higher education.
This was decided in a meeting between Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Prof Attaur Rehman and Italian Minister for Education and Research Letiza Moratti in Rome, says a press release issued on Thursday.
These fellowships will be for conducting research in Italian universities and research and development organizations.
Prof Attaur Rehman also informed the HEC spokesperson on telephone that the Italian government agreed to set up advanced labs for research. These labs will be jointly funded by both governments.
The HEC and Italian government are in the process of finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to be signed within a week’s time.
Prof Ata asked the Italian minister to help Pakistan set up an emerging university in Pakistan. The Italian government will consider the request, the press release said.
A joint working group having participation of three to four members from both sides is being formed to finalize modalities of cooperation and linkage programme to be jointly funded by Pakistani and Italian governments.
The commission provisionally selected seven students under the project “MA/MSc leading to Phd in Economics and Finance, Abroad”.
The selected students are Adnan Qadir Khan, Syeda Quratulain Masood, Nizamuddin Arshad, Aban Haq, Tanveer Shehzad, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Imran Khan. The selection has been made on the basis of their international GRE score.
The HEC has advised the provisionally-selected students to secure their admissions in universities at the earliest but not later than the session of September 2006 fall semester.
The preferable fields of study include applied economics, economics finance, international trade, international finance, public finance, monetary policy, econometrics, business finance, financial administration, corporate finance, business economics, financial management as an indicative list.
Following are the approved universities:
USA: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Chicago, Yale University, Northwestern University, University of Pennsylvania, California Institute of Technology, Duke University, Dartmouth College, Columbia University, Washington University at St Louis, Cornell University.
AUSTRALIA: Australian National University
SINGAPORE: National University of Singapore
UK: Oxford University, Cambridge University, London School of Economics and London Business School.
CANADA: Queen’s University, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, University of Western Ontario.
