Afghan Club back on top


ISLAMABAD, Sept 28: Afghan Club regained leadership in Pakistan Premier Soccer League when they defeated Navy 1-0 on Wednesday. Afghan Club won ten of their 19 matches in securing 34 points, while Wapda have collected 31 points from 14 games.

The first leg between Afghan Club and Navy at Chaman’s School ground last August saw Navy surprising the home team 1-0 but Afghans took sweet revenge by beating seamen 1-0. The all-important goal was scored by Khalil Ahmed.

Afghan Club have now three games left and they must win all three to build pressure on Wapda. The electricitymen are on driving seat as they have eight matches in hand and they are only three points behind the leaders.

Army brushed aside PWD 2-0.

The 12-team event, which will decide the national champions comprises 132 matches.

The soldiers had upperhand throughout 90-minute play at Army Stadium. Imran broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute and Jafar Hussain consolidated the lead in the 68th minute.

Rawalpindi’s Municipal Stadium hosted the one-sided PTCL and KPT encounter, which saw former winning 3-0.

Shahid Ahmed, international striker and SAF Games gold medallist, seized early lead for PTCL and gave confidence to Islamabad-based club. Muhammad Ejaz and Nasrullah completed the scoring.—PPI
