KARACHI, Sept 28: Out of 144 water samples collected from various parts of the city, 102 samples were found to contain bacteria injurious to human health.
Various teams of the Regulation and Quality Control section of the city government’s Health Department had collected water samples from Landhi Town, Mohammadi Colony, Federal B Area, Patel Para, Rizwan Society, Safoora Goth, Sher Mohammed Village, and Keamari and Lyari towns. They were sent to the laboratory for analysis.
According to the lab report, 102 samples, taken from Landhi and Lyari towns were found containing E. coli bacteria, which is injurious to human health. Area engineer of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board informed the same.
People of these areas have been advised not to use turbid water giving out bad odour.
They were told to take only boiled water and contact the nearest health centre in case of vomiting and diarrhoea.
At least 11 people died recently and another 1,150 were affected after they consumed contaminated water in Landhi.
A group of scientists that had collected samples of drinking water in Karachi observed that the microbial load in the water supplied was significantly high, and that it also consisted bacteria found in sewage.
Health experts had asked people to take care of water resources on self-help basis since the authorities had failed to come up with long-term and viable measure to ensure safe drinking water.—APP
