KARACHI: Plan finalized to avert jams in Ramazan

KARACHI, Sept 28: The Transport and Communications Department of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) on Wednesday decided to implement a multi-pronged traffic strategy in the month of Ramazan to avert possible traffic jams.

The decision was taken at a meeting held here to chalk out traffic-related plans for the holy month. EDO Transport and DG Mass Transit Cell Malik Zaheerul Islam presided over the session, which was also attended by officials of Traffic Police, Traffic Control Operation, Planning and Design and Works and Services Department of the City Government.

The meeting directed concern officials to complete installation of traffic signals on road intersections at Ameer Khusro Road and Tipu Sultan Road within 10 days.

In the meeting it was decided that traffic signals would not be shutoff during the month of Ramazan and vehicular traffic would be controlled by traffic signals while KESC would ensure power supply for signals.

It was decided to set up a monitoring team which would review the operation of 104 computerised traffic signals and remove any defects within two to six hours. The major faults would be removed in six hours and minor in two hours.

In order to receive complaints against out of order signals, a cell has been established in the City Government’s Transport Department where people can lodge complaint at telephone No 9230658 and at 2560592 in the Siemens Office.

It was decided that all traffic signals of the city government would operate during Ramazan-ul-Mubarak as per five-time plan with morning plan to be operative from 6 am to 9.30am, morning peak plan from 9.30am to 11am, afternoon plan from 11am to 2pm, evening plan from 2 to 7pm and night plan from 7pm to 6am.

After 15th of Ramazan, the traffic signal timings will be modified in accordance with traffic pressure and requirement.

The meeting was informed that KESC has provided two-phase electricity to traffic signals so as to ensure its continuity in case of loadshedding or any other defect.—PPI/APP
