KARACHI, Sept 28: The academic council of the University of Karachi on Wednesday recommended measures leading to minimum admissions of students from outstation or private chartered institutions to the varsity for the new academic session, said sources on campus.
The KU council met on Wednesday, with Vice-Chancellor Dr Pirzada Qasim in the chair. Most of the time was devoted to discussion of a new admission policy for honours and master’s programmes for the new session starting January 2006.
A source privy to the meeting said members were imformed that a considerable number of seats reserved at the varsity under the regular “K” category had gone to students, who resided mostly outside Karachi before taking the pre-requisite exams.
Such students, who had been acquiring education outside Karachi, got admission under the ‘K’ Category by virtue of their bachelor’s degree or HSC certificates acquired after appearing in exams in Karachi. This, most of the time, reduced chances for Karachi-born or domiciled students for getting admissions to the varsity.
Under the latest decision of the KU council, now, students having passed their matriculation and intermediate exams from Karachi’s educational boards would be entertained under the ‘K’ category for honours admission. And, those having passed matriculation, intermediate and graduate exams from Karachi-based institutions and desirous of admissions to master’s programmes would be given first preference, added the source.
In another resolution, students coming from private or other chartered varsities of Karachi would not be allowed to apply on open merit basis.
It has been recommended that a majority of seats would be offered to colleges and institutions affiliated with the University of Karachi, while a small percentage of seats would be offered, on merit basis, to students possessing degrees of other varsities of Karachi, or those coming from A/O level system of exams, said another source.
It was further observed that a considerable number of Karachi-based students failed to get admissions to the university due to the limited number of seats.
Spokesman for the varsity said admission schedule and other details for the new academic session would be finalized and announced by the university separately.
The academic council also resolved that the existing system of holding entry tests for BBA and MBA programmes would continue as usual, added the spokesman.
