ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: Lt-Gen (retd) Majeed Malik, senior vice- president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League and a candidate for Chakwal district nazim has decided to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court on Wednesday against a decision of the Rawalpindi Bench of the Lahore High Court upholding the rejection of his nomination papers by the district returning officer.

Advocate Abdul Hafeez Pirzada and Syed Iftikhar Hussain Gillani will plead his case.

Justice Mohammad Shabir Akhtar of the LHC Rawalpindi bench in his verdict on Monday rejected the plea of Gen Malik against the district returning officer’s decision.

The DRO Mirza Rafiuz Zaman, had rejected the nomination papers on an objection raised by councillor-elect M. Aurangzeb about the authenticity of Gen Malik’s matric certificate.

Justice Akhtar directed the Punjab University authorities to produce a gazette notification of the matric results along with Mr Malik’s certificate after the latter challenged the rejection of his nomination papers.

The university record presented before the court stated: “Abdul Majid S/o Mohammad Abbas Ali, did his matric in 1939 securing 487 marks and his date of birth is November 7, 1919.”

The counsel of Mr Aurangzeb challenged the contents of the record and the certificate and contended that Gen Malik’s date of birth was December 20, 1920, and his father’s name was Abbas Ali.

The court disposed of another petition filed by Omar Saleem Asghar, who stated that the official candidate for district nazim’s Sardar Ghulam Abbas, was trying to influence the electorate through the use of government machinery.

Online adds: Gen Malik has said he is confident that he will get justice from the highest judiciary.
