Ginepri downs local favourite
BANGKOK, Sept 27: Third seed Robby Ginepri came from a set down to knock local favourite Danai Udomchoke out of the Thailand Open tennis tournament 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the first round on Tuesday.
Thai fans were left looking to Paradorn Srichapan, Asia’s top men’s player, who was due to play Chen Ti of Taiwan later on Wednesday in the US$550,000- ATP event.
World number one and defending champion Roger Federer, who arrived Monday and has already undergone two training sessions at the Impact arena, is due to contest the first round on Wednesday, as is second seed Lleyton Hewitt.
America’s Ginepri recovered from a slow start to oust Udomchoke, who was feeling the effects of an upset stomach and spoke with his trainer at the end of the second set.
His successful debut in Thailand came after a US Open semi-final appearance this month, with the Georgia native left off the US squad which beat Belgium at the weekend in a Davis Cup play-off match.
The American, who began his run to form last summer with a second career title which he lifted at Indianapolis, said he went into his match blind against Udomchoke.
Udomchoke, 144th, dropped to 4-5 on the season.
Finnish sixth seed Jarkko Nieminen spent just 42 minutes on the court as Karol Kucera quit with a neck and shoulder injury, winning 6-1, 3-1 when the Slovak stopped.
A US Open quarter-finalist ranked 42nd, Nieminen said he never expected an easy afternoon as he won the opening set in 22 minutes, then found himself in the second round as Kucera quit after losing serve in the fourth game of the second.
