By Our Correspondent

BAHAWALPUR, Sept 27: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi has urged the newly elected councillors and nazims to elect PML candidates in the third phase of local election for the top slots in Bahawalpur district on October 6.

He was addressing a large gathering of councillors and nazims drawn from all parts of the district at the Circuit House here on Tuesday. MNAs, MPAs, PML candidates for top slots, including district nazim nominee Tariq Cheema, were also present.

Mr Elahi lauded the devolution programme launched four years ago. “Flaws in the system have now been removed as a result of which it would run smoothly in the coming years and people’s problems would be solved at their doorstep,” he added.

He said during the past four years Rs1.3 billion had been spent on the development of Bahawalpur while Rs 17 billion would be utilized on the provision of basic amenities to people of 17 tehsils of south Punjab.

He urged the councillors to support the PML nominees for the top slots so that the ongoing projects could be continued to achieve better results.

The chief minister announced Rs5 million for the district council complex, Bahawalpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and Bahawalpur Press Club, respectively.

Later, he inaugurated the dualized Sadiq Avenue, around five kilometres long road from Farid Gate to Baghdadul Jadid railway station, constructed at a cost of Rs64 million.

EXECUTION: Yaseen, 37, and Ibrahim, 29, of Mauza Noorpur Mari Shooq Elahi in Chishtian tehsil were hanged in the New Central Jail here on Tuesday.

According to prosecution they had murdered Sakina and her daughter Anwar in 1993. They were sentenced to death by the Bahawalnagar district and sessions judge and the Lahore High Court confirmed it. Their mercy petitions were dismissed by the president.
