Anti-polio campaign begins today

MIRPURKHAS, Sept 26: Sindh Health Minister Shabbir Ahmed Kaimkhani has said that it was parents’ responsibility to save their children from polio by getting them vaccinated on time.

He was speaking as a chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of polio eradication campaign, held at the civil hospital here on Monday.

He said that 17 cases of polio were reported in the country and three in Sindh, while Mirpurkhas district remained polio-free.

Mr Kaimkhani said that he will personally monitor the campaign in Mirpurkhas from September 27 to 29.

He urged the local people to cooperate with the teams so that children could be vaccinated.

Sindh Director Expanded Programme Immunization Dr Khadim Hussain Lakhair said that 18,676 teams were formed to vaccinate 6,257,061 children in Sindh.

DCO Khurshid Naeem Malik said the district government would form the district health policy to ensure better health facilities.

Those who also spoke earlier on the occasion were Dr Mohammad Azmodeh, the representative of the World Health Organisation, EDO health Dr Hadi Bux Leghari, District Zakat and Usher Committee Chairman Haji Akhlaq, and surgeon of the civil hospital, Dr Akhlaq Ahmed.

ROBBERY: Three unidentified armed robbers deprived a ghee trader, Furqan Ali, of Rs1,050,000 in Lal Para on Monday.

Furqan Ali was going to a bank when he was intercepted at gunpoint near Memon hall by bandits.

The town police lodged a case against the robbers.

Meanwhile, shops in the grain market and Khisakpura remained closed on Monday in protest against inefficiency of the town police.

The protesting shopkeepers demanded to the police DIG and the Mirpurkhas DPO to ensure arrest of the culprits who looted Ali.

ACCIDENT: One person was killed and four others were seriously injured as a motorcycle-rickshaw collided with a motorcycle on the Mirpurkhas-Umerkot road in Umerkot town on Saturday.

Allah Bachayo, who was riding the bike, died on the spot.

The injured were rickshaw driver Aslam Khaskheli, Mubarak Ahmed, Akbar Rajar and Tikam Bajir. They were taken to the taluka hospital.

Police lodged a case against the rickshaw driver.

SPSWA: The Sindh Paramedical Staff Welfare Association President Nazeer Ahmed Detho has welcomed the announcement by the Sindh Health Minister Shabbir Ahmed Kaimkhani for upgrading 32,000 paramedics from grade five to seven.
