PESHAWAR, Sept 26: An anti-terrorism court on Monday indicted a provincial lawmaker of the Awami National Party, Khalil Abbas, and nine others in an incident of pre-poll violence which left four people dead.

Mr Abbas and the other accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and decided to stand trial.

The court presided over by Mr Shah Jee Rehman Khan set Oct 3 as the date for the next hearing and summoned five prosecution witnesses on that date.

The violence erupted on the eve of the first phase of local government elections in Akora Khattak, Nowshera.

The complainant, Zulfiqar Khan, who is also newly elected union nazim of the area, had alleged that after his victory a procession was taken out by his supporters.

He said that the accused persons including Khalil Abbas, all members of a rival political group, had fired at the procession and brought about the deaths of four people.

After the registration of the FIR, the accused-applicant, Khalil Abbas had himself surrendered to the police and claimed that he was innocent and falsely implicated in the case.
