NEW YORK, Sept 24: The second of two Imams from Lodi California was deported to Pakistan, his attorney said on Friday as a federal grand jury reconvened to consider him an alleged terrorist for plotting by a Lodi father and son. Shabbir Ahmed was deported on Wednesday night after dropping his opposition to an immigration complaint last month, said his attorney, Saad Ahmad.
Mohammad Adil Khan, another Lodi religious leader, was deported last month after he stopped contesting a similar complaint that he overstayed his religious visa. Neither was charged with a crime, despite the government’s allegations that they intended to set up a terror training camp in Lodi.
Hamid Hayat, 22, and his father, Umer Hayat, 47, were originally charged only with lying to FBI agents who were investigating the alleged terror activity in Lodi. But Hamid Hayat was indicted on Thursday on a charge of providing material support to a terrorist organisation.—Online
