Mushtaq guides Sussex to second place

LONDON, Sept 24: Former Pakistan Test leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed equalled his career-best first-class score when he hit an unbeaten 90 against Kent to help Sussex finished second in the first division of the English County Championship. Mushtaq hit eight fours and two sixes as Sussex made 348 — a lead of 91.

On easy paced pitch, former England left-arm spinner Min Patel took five for 81 to take his season haul to 58. Robert Key passed 1,500 runs for season by reaching 84.

Sussex, who need to win to stand any chance of finishing runners-up behind Nottinghamshire, would have had their hopes dashed had they not claimed third batting bonus point that Mushtaq’s knock provided.

Sussex eventually won by eight wickets on Friday.

Another Pakistan discard Azhar Mahmood struck an undefeated 167 as Surrey, who were relegated to Division Two for next season, piled up 607 for four against Middlesex. Ex-England Test batsman Mark Ramprakash hammered 242 not out.
