Azra steals show for Wapda with hat trick

By A Sports Correspondent

KARACHI, Sept 24: National Games gold medallist and pre-tournament favourites, Wapda, outplayed Quetta Colours 11-0 as spearhead Azra Nasir registered a hat trick, second of the tournament, in the 21st National women’s hockey championship at the Hockey Club of Pakistan (HCP) Stadium on Saturday.

In the other match of the day, Sukkur, bronze medal winners of the last edition, notched up a 6-1 victory over Bahawalpur.

Drawn in Pool D, Wapda enjoyed complete ascendancy in the match against their opponents scoring five goals in the first half and the remaining in the post interval period.

Azra stole the limelight netting five of the total 11 goals, with last three coming in a row in as many minutes. Beenish Hayat scored twice while Aysha Arif, Rabia Quadir, Aqeela Naseem and Saba Saeed added one goal apiece.

The Sukkur-Bahawalpur match also turned out to be a one-sided affair. The winners led 1-3 at half time.

Tabassum (2) Amber, Naheed Khan, Sonia and Umer Rabaib, one each, shared the scoring honours for Sukkur while Asia Sadiq scored the consolation goal for the losers off a penalty stroke.

The Sukkur - Bahawalpur match scheduled for 4.00 pm, started 50 minutes behind schedule. The two teams remained lined up for an hour under scorching heat to be introduced to the Sindh Chief Minister, Dr. Arbab Ghulam Rahim, who graced the occasion for sometime.

Sunday is the rest day in the tournament.
