Action against owners of bangle units demanded

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Sept 24: The Hyderabad Glass Bangle Mazdoor Ittehad Union has demanded of the Sindh government to issue directives to owners of bangle manufacturing units to re-open their factories forthwith which have been illegally closed on September 22.

Speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Saturday, the provincial president of National Labour Federation, Rana Mehmood Ali Khan, general secretary of the union Siraj Gadi and Khursheed Ahmed alleged that the owners of the bangle manufacturing units have taken the law into their own hands and without any rhyme or reason or written notice have declared lock-out.

They said that even earlier, the factory owners had closed their factories for one month and refused to pay wages for the lay-off period in flagrant violation of labour laws.

They said there were 32 small and big bangle units where thousands of workers were employed directly whereas over 50,000 men and women worked in

their homes.

They regretted that all the workers were denied legal facilities, including social security cover. In this way, they said, the factory owners were saving millions of rupees in connivance with the officials of the Sindh Employees Social Security Institution.

They said that they had submitted memorandums to the president and the prime minister, the Sindh chief minister, the secretary and the director of labour, Sindh, underlining the problems of the workers but no action has so far been taken on their complaints.

The union leader appealed to the concerned authority to direct the owners of 30 bangle units of Hyderabad to reopen their factories which were illegally closed on September 22.
