Opposition to requisition Senate session

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Sept 23: Opposition senators on Friday decided to requisition the Senate session to discuss the alleged rigging in the local government elections, Gen Musharraf’s recent US visit and price-hike in the country.

Speaking at a news conference soon after the 22nd session of the Senate was prorogued, Leader of Opposition Raza Rabbani, Senator Ishaq Dar of the Pakistan Muslim League-N and Sanaullah Baloch of the Balochistan National Party said 39 opposition members had already signed a requisition notice to be submitted to the Senate Secretariat on Saturday.

Under the rules, the Senate chairman is bound to convene the session within 14 days of the receipt of a requisition notice.

Mr Rabbani said the decision to requisition the Senate had been taken following the refusal by the government to extend the ongoing session.

He said the opposition could not raise important issues in the session as it had to boycott the proceedings for the whole week to register its protest over the nomination of the presiding officer in the absence of the chairman and the deputy chairman.
