Davis Cup Gonzales outclasses Aqeel

SANTIAGO, Sept 23: World number 18 Fernando Gonzalez showed no mercy to a horribly outclassed Aqeel Khan of Pakistan as the Chilean clinched a crushing 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 win in the opening singles of their Davis Cup World Group play-off on Friday. Gonzalez, who was a gold medallist in the doubles at the Athens Olympics last summer, claimed the first point of the tie in exactly one hour allowing the 988th-ranked Khan just one game.

Chile are poised to make it 2-0 later when Nicolas Massu, the singles and doubles gold medal winner in Athens, takes on Pakistan’s top player Aisamul Haq Qureshi.—APP
