Surrey tumble from top flight

LONDON, Sept 22: Indian leg-spinner Yogesh Golwalkar on Thursday condemned Surrey to relegation from Division One of the County Championship. Although their final match was still continuing, the loss of the wicket of Scott Newman at The Oval meant Surrey could not overtake opponents Middlesex and escape the drop.

They entered the match needing to win and earn one more bonus point than their London rivals, an outcome that was put out of reach by Middlesex’s 404-5 declared on the first day of the match on Monday.

Their relegation leaves Kent as the only side to have spent every season in the top flight since the championship was split into two divisions in 2000.
