KARACHI, Sept 22: The Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) called the HEC to revise the salary structure of the teachers of the public sector varsities also as it had planned to enhance the salaries of the vice- chancellors, said a press release here on Thursday.

KUTS Secretary Sarwar Nasim said that the HEC’s efforts to introduce a new salary structure for the VCs as mentioned by Prof Dr Attaur Rahman at the meeting of National Forum on Higher Education in Islamabad were apparently an attempt to get his so-called progressive educational policies implemented at the varsities.

Although there can be no compromise on the quality and standard of PhD degrees and higher research but all steps will be taken by the teachers’ community to protect the autonomy and independence of varsities, he maintained.

Prof Nasim criticized the HEC for spending millions of rupees for projecting themselves through supplements in newspapers and said that it was an attempt to restore their reputation in the teaching community.—PPI
